Survival equipment

Ranger Mickey in the dusty, hot desert Humans are amazingly ill-equipped to survive outside a very narrow range of conditions.

Whether for fun or duty, many of us regularly venture out of that range, sometimes for extended periods of time. While some holidays and searches are day trips, many are planned (or turn out to be) longer. Planning for these is vital.

The equipment documented in this section helps us cope and survive.

Hydration
Portable fresh water is a necessity for even short trips, a matter of survival for longer ones. The normal amount of consumption jumps when stress and prolonged exertion take their toll.
  Camelbak
Camelbak: BFM hydration / pack / medical kit
The BFM is the military version of the largest Camelbak hydration system. 2550 cu in (42 l) of cargo plus up to 12 liters of water. We liked this pack so much we gave it our first-ever WINNER award.
  Camelbak: Skeeter children's hydration pack
Children have become an integral part of our outdoors experience, and they need dependable hydration even more than we do. Canteens lose their thrill quickly, so this smallest of hydration systems has real value. 35 oz (1 l) of water; reflective material. Nice.
Camelbak: Trail Blazer hydration / pack
This is a mid-sized combination system, capable of holding 70 oz (2 l) of water and 988 cu in (16.20 l) of supplies. It's a generous day pack.
Lights and lamps
Few things affect us as much as being in the dark, even in a non-threatening environment. Providing long-lasting and portable light is a must for any effective exploration (and rescue).
  Princeton Tec
Princeton Tec, located not too far away from Princeton (New Jersey), makes lights for the outdoors, underwater, and industrial uses. Their commitment to excellence is evident from the first glance at their packaging, different from competitors in two ways.
  Princeton Tec: Attitude handheld light
The Attitude is a great little handheld flashlight. The solid Lexan body, light weight, incredible feel in my hand, and battery-thrifty virtually unbreakable LEDs make this light a great replacement to existing home flashlights and a great addition to car glove compartments, home emergency kits, and of course, outdoors use.
  Princeton Tec: EOS LED headlamp
Princeton Tec: Shockwave LED dive light
Princeton Tec: Yukon HL LED headlamp
