Glossary

Here are some of the terms we use in our daily lives and on this website. If you have others you'd like to see added, or a correction or amplification of one of these terms, please let us know.

FRS: Family Radio Service, an licensed radio service for the general public. See an FRS radio.
gear: Any piece of equipment you value. It may be as commonplace as a cellular telephone or as esoteric as a mountaineering jumar. If you want it, have it, and want to play with it, it's gear.
Gear Queen: A gender-neutral term for someone who is constantly fiddling with gear, acquiring or lusting after new gear, and chatting about the latest and greatest item in their pocket, backpack, or vehicle.
ham: A licensed amateur radio service, or a practitioner thereof. See a ham radio.
